ATLANTA PERKS UP DURING 'MILLER TIME'

Why do the phrases “happy hour” and “Miller Time” seem so synonymous lately?
Well, it’s not due to the blue-collar brand of beer. Chalk it up to the pin-stripe and sweater dress crowds flocking to the “Live From Loews” events staged regularly by the midday lottery diva and tireless event promoter Rene Miller.
Last night’s free concert in the posh Midtown hotel’s lobby bar was a prime example of how seamlessly Loews guests and locals in the 30-and-up age range meld together for a feast of sights and sound.

For the past year “Live From Loews” shows have occurred every first Thursday of the month; headliners have included Jeff Lorber, Kirk Whalum, Alex Bugnon and Maysa.
Last night, trombonist Jeff Bradshaw and his seven-man band wowed the crowd with a 90-minute set of smooth jazz interpretations from his forthcoming CD, “Bone Appetit”, and then raised the roof with a raucous “second line” brass and drums free-for-all.
Starting this January 19 (8 p.m.-midnight) “Live From Loews” will begin staging more intimate acoustic sets every third Thursday. The introductory artist for this new series will be the soulful crooner Anthony David.

WELL-DRESSED GENTS CELEBRATE BOW TIES

Who knew that so many Atlanta men favor wearing bow ties?

Moreover, who knew so many Atlanta men can successfully knot one?

On top of all that, who knew the food at Davio’s (Phipps Plaza) was so scrumptious and the service was so hospitable?

If every “Bow Tie Wednesday” at Davio’s Northern Italian Steakhouse is like the one staged last night, yours truly (pictured with Atlanta master tailor Miguel Wilson) will definitely be back for another helping.

Roughly 100 gents showed up to take in the atmosphere and flaunt their neckwear flair.

The event, hosted by the Jay Austin company, presented the opportunity to purchase novelty bow ties (LSU, UGA, Georgia Tech prints, for example) as well as classic solids in silk and suede in the $50 price range.

The Davio’s delicacies were free and the (adult) beverages were reasonably priced.

The eye-candy - fellas should note – was plentiful, and the ladies in attendance were willing, ready and able to adjust ties at every turn.

Israeli Violin Sensation Re-Fuels "The Dream" at Memorial Dedication

Meet Miri Ben-Ari; if you haven't already.

Anyone left on the planet who's not yet acquainted with Ben-Ari's unique blend of classical violin, hip-hop and jazz likely will be after her performance Sunday at the dedication of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial in Washington,D.C.
A personal favorite of First Lady Michelle Obama's, Ben-Ari won "Best Rap Song" Grammy Award for co-writing Kanye West's smash 2005 hit, "Jesus Walks".
The song Ben-Ari's best known for was inspired by a line from the slain civil rights leader's "I Have a Dream" speech. The spell-binding piece is entitled, "Symphony of Brotherhood"rose as high as No. 2 on Billboard's "Hip Hop" charts in 2007.
At the King Memorial dedication, she debuted an original composition called "Black Tone" that was inspired by the Montgomery Bus Boycotts instigated by Rosa Parks' refusal to give up her seat. The acclaimed spoken word artist, Poem-Cees, provided vocal accompaniment.
"I've been a part of many major show, from playing Radio City Music Hall to performing at the Super Dome," Ben-Ari said in an exclusive interview. "But this time, it's historical. We'll all be there paying respect to an incomparable man. So I want to help make sure it's an experience we remember for a very long time."
She performed "Black Tone" an hour before President Barack Obama delivered his dedication speech.
The all-star roster of artists Ben-Ari's collaborated with in her relatively short career - after years of study under the iconic violinist Isaac Stern - includes: Wynton Marsalis, Patti Labelle, Janet Jackson, Jay Z and John Legend.
Besides being a violin virtuoso, she's somewhat of a visual artist whose body language resonates onstage.
"When I was recording with Wycleaf Jean, he said it's like the violin becomes an extension of me," Ben-Ari recalled. "And Kanye paid me the highest compliment by calling me the Miles Davis of our time.
"I just go into a zone and lose myself. It's me, the audience and the music."
She performed "Symphony of Brotherhood" at the White House at Mrs. Obama's special request earlier this year.
"I've done a lot in my career, but playing at the dedication will definitely be a major milestone for me," she said. "I came to the U.S. from a small town in Israel to pursue the American Dream. This is the land of possibilities and now I see they're real."

Divorce Doesn't Spell End of Power Couple's Influence

J. Lo and Marc Anthony must have a joint bank account as part of their pre-nuptial agreement.
What else would explain indications that they’re forging ahead with two new business ventures – as a couple – even though they announced last week that their marriage is kaput.
Not only is the pair preparing to launch a twin set of signature apparel collections for Kohl’s department stores this fall, but they’re also reportedly in the process of filming a reality TV series called “Q’Viva: The Chosen” that could require them to spend months together touring Latin America.
Imagine Tiger and Elin attempting that.
Then again, this could be a potential boon for Marc and J. Lo’s separate and conjoined careers. Until he re-marries to another bombshell, Mr. Anthony can certainly benefit from a boost to his stature as an entertainer. And Ms. Lopez certainly won’t be sitting as a judge on “American Idol” indefinitely.
Heck, the couple isn’t even ruling out the launch of a kidswear line inspired by their three-year-old twins.
The party line at Kohl’s is that “the Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony brands have always been positioned as two separate, distinct collections.” And when asked for observations about how a reality show can proceed under such circumstances, United Entertainment Group CEO Jarrod Moses told the New York Post: “The word on the street is that it's business as usual and they're shooting together ... As unfortunate as divorce is, when it comes to business, J. Lo and Marc look to a higher power: cash."

Latin-themed lounge delivers great food, cool drinks, hot music and warm service

There is a rose at Spanish Harlem.
A rose in semi-sheer black leggings, neon sneakers and a skin-tight red t-shirt at Spanish Harlem.
She waits tables. She pours drinks and takes reservations. She cheerfully and meticulously cleans the picture windows that look across the street toward the Sweet Auburn Curb Market.
She politely laughs off questions about why so many ambulances and fire trucks pass by Spanish Harlem, in downtown Atlanta, with their sirens blaring.
“Well, we are right around the corner from Grady Hospital,” the rose shrugs. “It’s just EMS doing their job.”
The rose’s name is “Victoria”. And her presence is emblematic of all that’s good about Spanish Harlem, one of our favorite new spots to dine, drink and relax.
By all indications, she’s just happy to be there.
So were we.
After an initial late-night visit for spicey food and sparkling adult beverages, the Be My Guest crew (check out co-host, Hadi!) recently returned to Spanish Harlem to gain more incite from owner Carlos Ramirez about what attracts patrons to the spot tucked away so unassumingly that one needs a reliable GPS to find it.

New Fashion Rules for Women Over 50?

Sources as credible and incredulous as Time magazine and NBC’s “Hoda and Kathie Lee” show both report that new rules of propriety are being suggested for fashionable women.
Following these new dictates - reported widely after a poll conducted by the British digest, Chef Diet, came to light – may require women of a certain age to overhaul their entire wardrobes.
According to reports, 2,000 women were probed for their opinions about age-appropriate attire. The response that’s drawn the most headline: all women should stop appearing in public wearing swimsuits of any kind at an aver age of 61. And the cut-off for wearing bikinis should be age 47.
But the survey results don’t stop there. Women weighed in on 13 other age-appropriate categories.
The attire, and “cut-off” dates, include:
Bikini, 47; Miniskirt, 35; Tube top, 33; Stilettos, 51; Belly piercing,35; Knee-high boots, 47; Sneakers, 44; Leather pants, 34; Leggings, 45; Ugg style boots, 45; One-piece swimsuit, 61; Tight vests, 44; Sheer blouses, 40; Long hair, 53; Ponytails, 51.

GQ Salutes Atlanta's 'Drunks', 'Crunks' and Zombies

According to GQ magazine, what Atlanta lacks in its quantity of great cocktail bars it compensates for in quality.
After an exhaustive search for the “25 Best Cocktail Bars in America”, GQ lists just one Atlanta venue in its October issue. Cities like Seattle, Chicago, San Francisco and New York (of course) are mentioned at least twice.
With nearly 35,000 miles logged and 400 cocktails consumed in the process, GQ heralded the “cocktail revolution” underway nationwide by ranking Buckhead’s Holeman & Finch Public House No. 10 on its list.
GQ writes that the mixologists at Holeman & Finch are to be trusted “completely” with your drink desires.
“On one visit, a (frat boy) grabbed the menu from us, tossed it aside and said, ‘That’s not what it’s about, man. Just tell them what you like.”
The GQ story ads that there’s a chance that H&F could help refine what’s perceived (by New Yorkers) as a frat row atmosphere in Buckhead. “Fearless” cocktails singled out include: the Pig-Pik Sour (bourbon, bacon sugar, egg whites).

"Twist" gives Dickens a vibrant spin in Atlanta

Have you seen "Twist" at Atlanta's Woodruff Arts Center yet?
Did it render you virtually speechless too?

How many times did the Charles Dickens classic "Oliver Twist" - reworked into a Depression-Era New Orleans tale - put you on the verge of tears, elation, panic or gut-busting laughter?
To call "Twist" a spell-binding two-plus hours of singing, dancing and acting would be putting it mildly. Its indescribable mix of anguish, intrigue, visual and redemptive story-telling gave EyeSeeStyle serious pause.
Do we dare declare that it's "Broadway-bound"?

NBA vet gives "rolling" mandate to celebrity friends

Atlanta Hawks forward Marvin Williams has a point to make before his fifth NBA season begins.
The “R-word”, as he calls it, has no place in anyone’s vocabulary.
The sharp-shooter who starred on the North Carolina Tar Heels’ ’05 NCAA Championship team is teaming up with Special Olympics to stage a benefit bowling event that he hopes will increase awareness about the impropriety of uttering the word “retarded”.
On Thursday, September 23 (6:30-9 p.m.) at Atlantic Station’s 300 Atlanta lanes, Williams will play host to celebrity friends and guests ($40 per person) for the “Strike the R-Word” event. All participants are eligible to win prizes, and prompted to remember what they’re gathering for.
“This is part of a campaign to discourage people from using it,” said Williams, during a break between workouts to prepare for the start of training camp later this month.
“It’s offensive to people with mental disabilities and the people who care for them. And it’s offensive, obviously, to anyone who gets called that. It’s not the best choice of words. I could think of a thousand better ones.”
Supporting Special Olympics is nothing new to Williams. As part of his upbringing in suburban Seattle, he voluntarily ushered children with special needs on boat trips and assisted as an athletic trainer.

“I’m not related to anyone with a mental disability,” Williams said. “It’s just a cause I became involved with and always had fun with.”
Speaking of fun, “Strike the R-Word” attendees can compete to win a special prize for Most Gutter Balls rolled.
Williams said he might walk away with that one.
“I wish I could say I’m a good bowler, but I’m really not,” he confessed.
“Just come out dressed casually and be ready to have a great time,” he urged the public. “If nothing else, you can enjoy yourself laughing at me!”

For a man who was stricken with a life-threatening muscular disorder just three years ago, the dapper balladeer Will Downing looks mighty good. And he sounds even better.

In a nod to his most faithful fans, Downing chose Atlanta for the national debut party for "Lust, Love and Lies: An Audio Novel" . With "Lust, Love and Lies", Downing proves that he's overcome both the rare, chronic illness Polymyositis, but also any fear of rejection he's faced personally or professionally. Soulful singer speaks 'passionate' truth for the masses

Chances are, you’ll wear a silly grin after hearing selections from Will Downing’s newest release, “Lust, Love and Lies”.
That’s because most fans of adult contemporary music have experienced the personal dramas that Downing weaves into what he fondly calls “an audio soap opera”.
Downing debuts “Lust, Love and Lies” (Peak/Concord) Tuesday with a personal appearance at the Loew’s Atlanta Hotel in Midtown (8 p.m.-until). He’s also scheduled to headline an October 2 concert at Atlanta’s Symphony Hall, where he’ll stitch “LL&L” material into a repertoire that spans 14 albums in 22 years.

“Lust, Love and Lies” happens to be sewn together, in a novel fashion, by Downing’s spoken word interludes. But the soulful singer says, modestly: “I’m not reinventing the wheel here. It’s the same ‘boy meets girl’ story that’s been sung about millions of times.”

The main difference: Downing digs into the details, while refusing to reveal whether the tour de force is biographical or not.
“Two people meet in a club, let’s say, and at first there’s that lust factor. We bypass the ‘like’ and get to the love factor of it in a matter of time. Then, sometimes, things go wrong. And that’s where the lies come in.”

The reigning queen of Atlanta's jazz scene, Rene Miller, organized Downing's set at Loew's as part of her personal quest: the Power of Me initiative.

Real Estate Agent's 'Italian' recipe earns $20K prize!

Atlanta – the biggest city in the U.S. that still seems starved for sartorial validation – gets a heaping dose of salutation in the October 2010 edition of Esquire.
The venerable men’s fashion, lifestyle and entertainment magazine has just declared Angel Ramos as this year’s winner of its annual “Best Dressed Real Man” competition. Ramos, a “luxury real estate” agent, earns a $20,000 grand prize that includes a $10,000 Kenneth Cole wardrobe, an IWC chronograph and VIP seating at a New York Fashion Week runway show.
According to an online Esquire preview of the issue that’s slowly rolling out to newsstands this week, Ramos found the designation “humbling”.
“It just shows that you don’t have to be a millionaire or someone famous to be acknowledged for your style…anyone can do it,” he said.
Aspects of Ramos’ style that Esquire latched onto included: The Uneven Tie; Bold, Vintage Eyewear; and The Functional Pocket Square.
Ramos, who has since re-located to Miami during the process of being judged against thousands of other entrants, confessed: “I use my pocket square to wipe the sweat.”
Perhaps now – given Ramos’ coronation and connections to the city – Atlanta can wipe its brow and relax.

The panoramic views from atop Atlanta’s new 12th & Midtown plaza are stunning enough. But it’s hard to remember an occasion that transfixed the high-style set as much as the Jeffrey Fashion Cares benefit runway show did Monday night at the stunning venue.
Guests who’d paid premium ticket prices that benefited AIDS and cancer charities for an 18th straight year had more than just the chicest fall styles selected by retail icon Jeffrey Kalinsky. They were also treated to glimpses of what fashion fiends like themselves will be wearing come autumn.

Major pieces by the acclaimed design duo that helms the Proenza Schouler label were shown prominently, along with apparel from the A-list of brands that Kalinsky cultivates. Oscar-winner forges epic links with local heroes

The picture wasn't so pretty back in 1996, when actress Halle Berry was engaging in a bitter divorce from former Atlanta Braves slugger David Justice. During that period, yours truly was on the receiving end of several surreal calls from Halle and her agent, Vince, to explain their side of the story.
If the historic cover story on Halle Berry in this September's Vogue is any indication, though, the Oscar-winner has withstood all her tests of time. There had not been a Black woman on the cover of Vogue (American) since Naomi Campbell's appearance there in 1990.
Right now, the prospects of Berry aligning her star power with those of other legendary talents with deep Atlanta roots appears bright. The most enlightening news coming out of the revealing Vogue piece is that Halle Berry will soon team with Morehouse College grad Samuel L. Jackson and Alliance Theatre director Kenny Leon for a Broadway production about Martin Luther King, Jr.'s final night alive.
In "The Mountaintop", Berry will play an invisible ghost/servant hovering around the infamous Lorraine Hotel room.
As she jokes with Vogue, filming "Catwoman" was a major career misstep.
But Halle Berry once again proves, there's always the next act.

TAX DELECTABLE: Just when you thought the well of celebrity chef ‘cook-off ‘ concepts had been drained, here comes another. And for once, it’s for a good cause.
The non-profit Atlanta Community Food Bank will benefit greatly from Friday night’s “Food Rave” at the Mason Murer Fine Art Gallery (199 Armour Drive) in Buckhead. At this August 27 (7-11 p.m. )event, an all-star cast of local chefs will serve nibbles to guests who can cast votes for the winner of the 2010 Rave Review award.

Reality show designer brings 'more drama' to Atlanta

“Project Runway” runner-up Emilio Sosa may soon have Atlantans chanting, “Please sir, I want some more.”
Sosa, who placed second among designers competing in Season 7 of the hit Lifetime reality series, took time away from a hectic work load in New York this week to put the final touches on the wardrobe for the Alliance Theatr’se much-anticipated musical, “Twist”.
“Twist”, which premieres September 1, promises a jazzy revamp of the classic Charles Dickens novel “Oliver Twist”. Instead of 18th Century London, “Twist” is set against a bustling Bourbon Street background, circa 1928.

The story remains the same: an orphan in search of affection. But Sosa was hired by director-choreographer Debbie Allen (of “Fame” fame) to re-create the characters’ overall look .
Sosa seems up to the task. He’s credited with the costume design for the dark romantic comedy “Trust”, starring Zach Braff, that’s now on an extended run off Broadway. He’s also been hired by legendary folk-rocker Paul Simon to wardrobe the cast for “Capeman” during it’s limited (Aug. 14-16) on Broadway.

Lingerie label's NFL deal evades the 'Dirty Birds'!

How is it that an NFL franchise with sufficient fire-power to go deep into the playoffs this season gets dismissed this way by Victoria's Secret?
The lingerie label tapped a deal with pro football to produce signature panties and paint-on tops bearing the logos of 13 franchises; but the Atlanta Falcons aren't among them.
This week, the Philadelphia Business Journal can boast that the Eagles - where spurned QB Michael Vick now nests - are included on the roster of teams Victoria's Secret caters to, in stores and online starting August 10.
Rivals from the NFC being embraced include: the Dallas Cowboys, the Carolina Panthers, the Washington Redskins, New York Giants and Minnesota Vikings. From the AFC Division, Victoria's Secret hails the New England Patriots, the New Jets, the San Diego Chargers, Denver Broncos, Pittsburgh Steelers and Oakland Raiders.
It boggles the mind how the marketing geniuses at the unmentionables conglomerate could have bypassed a market like Atlanta, with a legendary per capita deluge of pro athletes and "shoe modeling" establishments. But maybe those modern-day "Mad Men" know something we don't.
Perhaps the record-setting heat will last through fall here; and female football fans would rather chill, and cheer on their team au naturale.

Ellianna Placas installed as new "face" of magazine

For now at least, the tag line "Where Black Women Come First" still runs down the spine of Essence magazine. But will all that have to change once a white woman takes over as fashion editor of the publication this September?
Media critics, faithful readers and former employees at Essence don't have the kindest things to say about Editor-in-Chief Angela Burt-Murray's choice of Ellianna Placas to direct the most marketable aspects of the magazine.
Since news of the move broke some 72 hours ago, there's been a cyclone of outrage swirling in social media circles. Some highly qualified and immensely experienced black fashion editors have unabashedly gone to Facebook to speak out harshly about the situation.
Burt-Murray has reached out to major media outlets to defend her decision; but, oddly, there are no current references to Placas on Essence's web site. Is there fear within that readers would overwhelm the site with criticism?
So, what's your reaction? Does Essence deserve kudos for taking such a drastic step, or condemnation?

Asking Halle Berry to star in a film about stiletto heel worship is like making a movie about celibacy, with Tiger Woods as the leading man.
To quote the ever-eloquent R&B lyricist Keith Sweat: "Sumpin, sumpin, sumpin, sumpin just ain't right" with this next picture Berry's set to appear in.
After extensive online research - excluding Youtube clips of the toe-curling sex scene with Billy Bob Thornton in "Monster's Ball" that won her an Academy Award - Halle Berry's feet appear too jacked up for her to play the lead in the screen adaptation of "Shoe Addicts Anonymous". But, as WWD reports, filming of Beth Harbison's best-selling novel about a group of women who share the same shoe size (and little else)begins in Chicago this fall.
Photographers follow Berry relentlessly, whether she's on the red carpet or at Wal-Mart. Rarely, if ever, are her feet portrayed as her best asset. In fact, there are frequent suggestions that Halle Berry has six toes.
She's gonna need all her Oscar-winning talent _ or a stung/foot double _ to pull this role off.
Luckily for her, "Shoe Addicts Anonymous" is meant to be a farce about fashion obsession. So, if Halle has a moment reminiscent of Jim Brown (or was it Isaac Hayes who got his big toe shot off) in "I'm Gonna Git You Sucka", feel free to laugh.

Listen to me now. Believe me later on.
That, essentially, was the message expressed by Jim Whitlow, owner of the DEKA Athletics shop in Buckhead once he sealed the deal to start selling designer down vests so exclusive that customers are paying as much as $2,500 for them.
Until now, the "Love Vests" - produced in collaboration between pop-culture impressario Darren Romanelli and haute couture apprentice Tetsuzo "Tet" Okubo - were only available at Maxfield in L.A.
To herald a move from his current Pharr Road location to new digs at the revamped Around Lenox shopping strip this fall, Whitlow called (almost breathlessly) with the news that limited-edition Love Vest designs will be included in his store's mix of Atlanta exclusives (Y3 and Stella McCartney for Adidas included).
Each Love Vest is, "a piece of art...one of a kind", Whitlow gushed as he rattled off names of NBA stars and chart-topping musicians who are clamoring to purchase. The vests combine gritty war supply fabrics and patches with chic cashmere and leather details.
Mainly, the Love Vest look piques EyeSeeStyle's interest due to the sneak peek at them in the new music video for the confab between the rapper Nas and the prince of reggae royalty,"Jr. Gong" Marley.

The planet yawned, yesterday, in response to the first credible report that Janet Jackson will soon appear in glossy ads endorsing Blackglama furs.
Frankly, so did I.
I waited a full day after reading the news from WWD to comment; because if People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) didn't lodge a protest, it wouldn't be news. Would it?
A day late, and a relevancy quotient short, a PETA spokesperson's statement finally started circulating around certain blogs saying that Miss Jackson took the luxury fur endorsement deal because her career is declining and she's "desperate".
If PETA can't even get people riled up about the massacre of non-commercial wildlife in the wake of the BP oil spill, how much impact can the have on the fashion fur industry right now? Who's truly desperate?
WWD answered the most intriguing question related to the story: Yes, Janet did get to keep the furs she modeled.
To this Eye, the only problem with the "What Becomes A Legend Most" ad Jackson appears in for Blackglama is that is doesn't go far enough to link the stark, surreal imagery of the "Scream" music video she shot eons ago with her dearly departed brother, Michael.

Apparently, the message hasn't gotten through to ESPN's Erin Andrews that the public's grown tired of her personal pity party.
Perhaps the uninviting portrayal of her in the August edition of Vanity Fair magazine will bring the sports network's "sideline reporter" to the realization we collectively have more dire crises to attend to then hers.
In an awkward and scathing question-answer session with the glossy’s celebrity news editor George Wayne, Andrews comes across as a selfish poseur who was granted a prime opportunity for positive exposure but, “(clearly) was not in the mood for any lighthearted banter.”
The sexy star who corrals coaches and players during college football halftime shows was victimized in 2009 by a cyber-stalker who posted illegally-obtained nude images of her on the web. In the aftermath: the seedy character was caught and sent to prison; Andrews (32) announced plans to move away from Atlanta for the bright lights of Manhattan; she wore a series of “barely there” ensembles during a failed attempt to win “Dancing With The Stars”; and she recently inked new deals to report for both ESPN and ABC’s “Good Morning America”.
Andrews’ ongoing whimpering about “everything that I have been through”, juxtaposed against the gallery of Vanity Fair photos she posed for (clingy dresses, stiletto heels, alluring poses), smacks of hypocrisy. And if she’s so opposed to the objectification of women, why did refer to herself as “the human pretzel” and speak so precisely about her body measurements?
At the very beginning of Wayne’s article on Andrews, it’s pointed out that she was born under the sign of Taurus. In a back-handed way, Vanity Fair seems to be hinting that Andrews is full of bull.

At a German trade show this week, "Avatar" star Zoe Saldana (above) was introduced as the next spokesmodel for innerwear that's become synonymous with comfort and controversy. The off-shoot collection is called Envy.
The initial campaign shot of Saldana released to the media leaves a bit to be desired: sure it evokes that fiber-optic sheen of the blockbuster movie she most recently starred in, but it doesn't necessarily distinguish the look and feel from what's already stagnating on retail shelves.
Will the Zoe Saldana campaign come between you and your cash card?
EYES WIDE SHUT?: Somehow, it's hard to envision a day when a sunglass collection "co-designed" by Mary J Blige can begin to compete with the labels (i.e. Louis Vuitton, Chanel, Fendi, Versace, etc.) that she and her musical ilk helped to popularize. Frankly, it's hard not to forecast a quick bootlegging effort chasing any sunglass brand the R&B diva attaches her name to, either. But here she goes: Blige just announced the launch of an exclusive collection of shades (4 styles, $165-$225 per pair) to be sold only at Nordstrom and Bergdorf Goodman stores starting, according to WWD in October.
(Pardon ESS for asking, but: isn't the prime time for buying sunglasses over by then?; and are those stores really where Mary J's core fans shop?)

What's the true price of celebrity?
Having to make marketing moves that cast you in a foolish light. That's what.
Take the supreme Dirty South rapper Antwon "Big Boi" Patton, of the duo OutKast, for instance. Dude's been so desperate to get his much delayed solo CD launched that he's reached beyond all the respected critics who rave about "Sir Lucious Left Foot: The Son of Chico Dusty", and submitted himself to sideshow acts like the one in Paste magazine.
What a bummer: being teased into thinking you'd be reading intimate secrets about a hip-hop star who prefers to wear bow ties, only to realize the feature consisted of Big looking at a short sampling of product photos and having his description of them cropped to a clipped few sentences.
And (pardon the expression) WTF?? Why does big keep saying in the article that he likes, 'whatever girls like'?
Isn't he married with kids? Can we trace the saggy pants trend back, therefore, to females' approval?
Just askin'...

SMELL GOOD, OR DIE TRYING: Running low on your supply of "eau de action movie hero", fellas? Well, never fear. Bruce Willis is here to spritz you down with a signature scent that must have seemed like as good an idea, at the time, as greenlighting "Lucky Number Slevin".
No doubt, this fragrance launch will provide classic comedic fodder for the next Willis appearance on the Letterman show. But the funniest thing is: if the action hero's name wasn't etched on the sturdy square glass bottle with a cedar wood stopper, we might have considered buying it.

Zaza Pachulia adds pizazz to Atlanta's nightclub scene

Look for the white Bentley parked right in front of the new Buckhead Bottle Bar for proof that it's on and poppin' inside.
That'll be the surest indication that owner Zaza Pachulia - the Atlanta Hawks 7-foot center - is in the house. And his high-flying teammates will likely be in tow.
In an exclusive EyeSeeStyle interview an hour prior to the lounge’s grand opening to local lifestyle critics and popular partiers, Pachulia said his prime motivation for diving into the bar scene was to provide fellow players a place to eat, socialize and relax after home games. One of his business partners divulged that he’s nearly done revitalizing a “café” space in downtown Atlanta as well.
At first glance, the Bottle Bar seems like a refreshing departure from the played-out “VIP vs. the public” affectations that have plagued Atlanta too long. It’s an airy space that can cater to sports fans, foodies and poseurs all at once.

Pop music diva launching Lollipop perfumes

Mariah Carey has cancelled plans to spend part of her summer in Atlanta, filming a role in Tyler Perry’s next movie. But the pop diva’s aroma will be wafting all around the metro area, starting July 10, when her latest series of fragrances launches at stores like Macy’s, Dillard’s and J.C. Penney.
It’s just been announced that “the Voice”, as she likes to be called, has a novel new deal with Elizabeth Arden and Bazooka Candy Brands to endorse three new scents called Lollipop Bling. Individually, they’re named: Ribbon, Mine Again and Honey.
To promote the scents targeted toward girls who shop in the $35 price range, Mariah appears in ads dressed in what passes for slumber party attire. In a round-about way, the fragrances reportedly were inspired by Nick Cannon’s propensity for giving his wife, Mariah, wedding rings disguised as diamond-encrusted Ring Pop candies.
The Market Watch financial news service reports that sales of the scents will be boosted by fall with gumball machine gift sets and roll-on fragrance sticks. Women’s Wear Daily quoted remarks from Carey stating, “ I’m alwayls looking for unique business models to connect with my fans”.
The question remains: is Mariah’s new scent sensation too sticky sweet for the target market’s tastes?

For every one Naomi Campbell or Eva Mendes out there modeling for designer brands, there are about 90 Christy Turlingtons. Or so the controversial new documentary by Canadian filmmaker Elizabeth St. Philip would have us believe.
In “The Colour of Beauty”, St. Philips paints a discouraging portrait of how harshly Blacks are judged by fashion labels, agents and runway show producers. No wonder the vast majority of ads featuring people of color focus on the stars of stage, screen, sports or rap/R&B; the clothes and beauty biz knows they’re already bankable.
But “The Colour of Beauty” suggests that the industry is morally bankrupt when it comes to giving Black models a fair shake. CNN anchor Tony Harris stirred up a small sh*tstorm of criticism when he aired a feature about the film that alleged “institutional racism in the fashion industry”.

Two of Atlanta's most popular hangouts deserve a toast for being added to the precious few listed by Esquire Magazine as the "Best Bars in America: 2010
The June/July "How To Be A Man" themed issue cites as its criteria: "the qualities we appreciate most in the places where we drink." Contributor David Wondrich was entrusted to divide the nation's best bars into five categories.
The Holeman & Finch Public House in Buckhead (left) was praised in the "Very Good Food" division. Esquire recommends the "cornmeal-fried oysters, griddled pork belly, a world-class pasta carbonara, and an impreesive assortment of organ meats."
As for "The Bar You Take A Woman To", Esquire singled out Fontaine's Oyster House in Virginia Highland.

"It's not really romantic," according to the back-handed review. "It's the kind of place that can become romantic", presumably after enough adult beverages.

Sex symbols simultaneously launching new scents for Coty

By Christmas, at the latest, we should all know who the true queen of celebrity perfume endorsers is. Film siren Halle Berry and singer/actress Jennifer Lopez will battle for supremacy in the category starting in Auguest, when each leading lady launches a new signature fragrance for Coty.
Reportedly, Berry and Lopez announced within hours of each other that they're launching news scents for fall, and industry analysts expect them each to reap at least $20 million (U.S.) at retail in their first years.
But each star's wattage will determine which _ if either _ can reach potential sales of triple that worldwide when the dust settles.
Berry's newest fragrance is called "Reveal". The new Lopez scent's name is "Love and Glamour".

Jeffrey Fashion Cares 2010 to feature dynamic duo!

Lightning strikes are all too familiar this summer in Atlanta.
But the bolt of news about the pair picked to appear as guest designers for this year’s Jeffrey Fashion Cares fundraiser revives locals' interest in updating their wardrobes going into fall.
Jeffrey Fashion Cares _ the city’s premiere annual fashion show that has raised $9 million for breast cancer and AIDS charities since its inception 18 years ago _ will take place August 30 (7 p.m.-until) at 12th & Midtown.
The announcement of Proenza Schouler’s “special” guest designation occurred at the W Atlanta Hotel Thursday night. Principals close to the event parrot the same word about what’s coming: “thrilled”.
Jeffrey Kalinsky, the upscale retail visionary who calls the shots (ultimately) describes the Proenza Schouler collection to be showcased (along with other top designers' lines) as “outstanding”, and leading critics agree.
The general manager of 12th & Midtown's centerpiece, the Loews Atlanta’s Valerie Ferguson, said: “This event truly puts the face of compassion on the fashion industry.”
Face time is one thing Proenza Schouler doesn’t lack.
Their label’s barely a decade old and yet hogs headlines for its CFDA awards , celebrity endorsements, Target tie-ins, and provocative ads like few others.

Supermodel causes hysteria at World Cup case debut!

What's up with that wig? What's up with that pose? What's up with that bandage on uber-model Naomi Campbell's thigh?
Did the volatile mannequin known for assaulting servants get the kick-back she probably deserves for past infractions. Or was she in such a rush to attend the unveiling of the case Louis Vuitton hopes to one day see the World Cup trophy carried around in that she knicked herself shaving.
Make no mistake: these eyes saw Campbell in her prime stalking the world's top designers' fashion runways, and there's no one so definitively fierce in person.
But the question remains: how can someone blessed with the where-with-all to always appear flawless allow herself to come out looking so flawed?
And, how can you not love Naomi's reference to "kick in balls" action at the upcoming tourney in South Africa?
P.S.: The New York media left out a couple of prime places for viewing this month's World Cup matches around Atlanta.

According to a trusted source who shall remain shameless..."Both P'cheen International Pub and Diesel Filling Station will be open (10 a.m. - until) during the World Cup. They are partnering with 'Soccer in the Streets' and Peroni, so for each Peroni pint sold, $1 gets donated to (disadvantaged youth)."

Atlanta's premiere fashion show finds fabulous new home!

Atlanta’s premiere social event _ the annual Jeffrey Fashion Cares benefit gala _ has found a new home.
The 18th installment of the gala that’s raised $9 million so far for AIDS and breast cancer charities will take place on August 30 (7 p.m.-until) at 12th & Midtown, the toniest new shopping/dining/stay-cationing venue in the city.
As if the Fall fashion preview that event founder Jeffrey Kalinsky will stage isn’t enough, attendees will be treated to a fabulous skyline view. The show is scheduled to take place on the 33rd floor of a just-completed highrise adjacent the posh new Loew’s Atlanta hotel.
Spanx founder, Sara Blakely, is this year’s honorary co-chair; so the mind wanders about the possibilities of her shapewear getting soaked in the rooftop pool.

Oil spill? What oil spill? That's not even in the top 10!
And on the eve of what many men consider the official start of grilling season, the Food Channel's airing (of all things) a marathon series about top chefs cooking for celebrities' vegetarian pets!
So, as a public service, ESS is pausing for the cause, and pointing out that there are reliable sources of info out there to keep you from scorching your meat _ literally and figuratively _ this Memorial Day.

GQ: Atlanta Bar's Best for World Cup Viewing

Go ahead and admit it: You like to watch.
Soccer, that is. And you'll get more than an eyefull of the world's game in June when the World Cup descends on multiple venues in South Africa, and captivates the media's attention like never before.
The fashion world, as evidenced by the latest Vanity Fair cover piece, has already embraced the matches to unfold. All the major brands _ Adidas, Nike, Puma, Umbro, etc. _ are rolling out special collections centered around the sport's major teams and players.
If they're not household names, they will be soon.
And Atlanta's not left out of the fray. In a special section of its June issue dedicated to the World Cup, GQ singles out the grungy Brewhouse Cafe in Little Five Points as one of the six "best soccercentric bars in America".
As if parking spaces at the Brewhouse aren't scarce enough, GQ reports, "They're setting up a tent in the parking lot for match viewings on 3-D TVs"!

Tennis great commits MAJOR fashion faux pas in Paris!

Is the elder Williams sister, Venus, hurting for money or something?
Have too many failed attempts to win the French Open finally driven the tennis great nuts?
For some unexplainable reason, Venus Williams chose to wear an outfit as raw as the red clay courts at Roland Garros stadium during a winning first round match Monday. Sister Serena, not to be outdone, flaunted a clingy pair of tennis ball green booty shorts beneath a frilly, sky blue top during her own first-round win.
The Williams sisters never shy away from attention, it's true. But Venus has bent over backwards _ in the most un-ladylike of ways _ to draw the media toward herself.
Whether or not she reaches the victory stand or not at the Grand Slam event that most frustrates her, is this truly the image she should be presenting to the girls who dreams of tracing her legendary footsteps?

NeNe's 'brand new' nose inhales attention

New whiff of drama for "Real Housewives of Atlanta" star

News outlets across America were all atwitter Wednesday after “Real Housewives of Atlanta” co-star NeNe Leakes made a most dramatic public appearance that revealed what the press deems radical surgery on her nose.
Rampant speculation among sites as various as UsWeekly, Bossip and Radar Online suggest that the reality series siren has a new nose job that renders her virtually unrecognizable. Initial reader comments on such sites range from derision to delight at NeNe’s elongated bridge and narrower nostrils.
Leakes’ Twitter page has not been updated since May 10, 2010; more than a week prior to her attendance at the “Dancing Stars of Atlanta” gala to benefit the battle against Alzheimers. So far, there’s been no reported comment from Leakes to confirm or deny the nose job narrative unfolding.
Fellow cast members of the Bravo! reality TV series (Sheree Whitfield, Kim Zolciak, Cynthia Bailey) were also in attendance and smiling broadly. That should serve as an indication that an episode taping was underway.
Given the widespread fascination with plastic surgery addiction cases among entertainers, what NeNe Leakes has or hasn’t had done to her face will no doubt renew interest in a show that goes to greater extremes each season to capture viewers and headlines.

SCAD Design Students: Touchy-Feely In Public

Vogue editor, DVF forecast bright futures for rising talents

In case you weren’t among the 5,000 fashion fanatics in attendance last weekend for the 2010 SCAD Style runway show, there’s still one chance left to see designs by the students that Vogue’s editor-at-large and a cadre of industry leaders clutch to their bosoms like teddy bears at bedtime.
The top 20 fashion design talents from the Savannah College of Art and Design will stage "Fashion Seen" _ an up-close and personal presentation of their graduate collections _ on Thursday (7:30-until) at the prestigious school’s Atlanta campus (1600 Peachtree Street). It’s a festive (food and wine) occasion free and open to the public; but guests must register to attend because space is limited.
These are many of the same style innovations that wrap-dress queen Diane Von Furstenberg reviewed while receiving the 10th Annual Lifetime Achievement Award endowed by Vogue’s outsized personality, Andre Leon Talley. Previous awardees (who yours truly interviewed for the occasion) include Oscar de la Renta, Tom Ford and Miuccia Prada.
This year’s roster of top design students were mentored by Zac Posen, Bryan Bradley, Angel Sanchez and Catherine Malandrino, with a stronger emphasis than ever on landing jobs that could ultimately lead to Fashion Week shows of their own.
As if the student collections won’t be enough to hold guests’ interests, there will be an exclusive viewing of the provocative photos taken by the likes of Avedon, Penn and Chevalier that the designer most born to wardrobe Naomi Campbell, Azzedine Alaia, owns and cherishes.

Atlanta's 'King of Clubs' Goes Underground

Some night, some how, some poor soul is going to make her way to the alleyway door of the hottest new "hush-hush" night spot in Atlanta and here that dreaded refrain from the DJ Lil' Louis classic, "Lonely People".
Miss Thing (snap), there IS no guest list tonight!
At the new Parlour _ in the basement of the Midtown club Door 44 _ there's an odd "don't ask, don't tell" policy in effect. For now at least, it's an "invitation only" affair down there.
This demented twist of the velvet rope restricts anyone from the main venue upstairs from entering The Parlour; and its access is through a secluded back door.
The Parlour employs mixologists who have the time to painstakingly prepare the sort of made-to-order drinks that would cripple the bar upstairs. And a separate deejay's task is to cater as exactly as possible to the tastes of the 50 or so invitees the space can hold.
Only after conducting a sneak preview interview with EyeSeeStyle before The Parlour welcomes its first guests did co-owner Pablo Henderson reveal that there's an aspect of reverse psychology in play.
"This is a space designed for our crowd," he confided. "People who wouldn't normally set foot in your average Midtown club because they think it's all generic music and generic drinks."
"But if you're down here," he added, "you can go upstairs and discover, 'Hey, it's not so bad', and come back down when you want."

Fashion guru, Kalinsky, taps Spanx founder for fundraiser

Get ready to grin and bare it Atlanta: When the city's premiere fashion show picked the founder of Spanx Sara Blakely as the honory chair for 2010, the risk of showing any flaw at all went out the window.
Details are still sketchy about exactly when and where the pre-fall collections showcase will take place. (Trust me: this production's never short on dramatic build-up.)
Most importantly, AIDS and breast cancer charities reap nearly ever dollar raised by Jeffrey Fashion Cares spectulars; to the tune of $9 million since 1992.
Even if expendable incomes expand, for a lucky few, in time for the fall fashion season, that's no excuse for waistlines to go the same route? Right?
It'll be interesting to see how Blakely's innerwear innovations get showcased during a show normally reserved for styles worn in winter; when it's considered okay to cover up.

If pictures truly paint a thousand words, say what you will (in the COMMENT box below, preferably) about these get-ups worn Sunday by new members of the "Real Housewives of Atlanta" cast at the 45th Annual Atlanta Steeplechase event staged so far north of the city it might as well have been in Tennessee.
Like the outfits worn by the Bravo! channel reality series latest additions, Cynthia Bailey (above left) and Phaedra Parks? Doesn't that gray-bearded gent escorting them onto the grassy knoll look suave?
And how about that that natty ensemble that the Atlanta-based Uber-stylist/master interloper Dwight Eubanks (center) slapped together for the occasion. Is he making his play to upstage all the other "ladies" in the cast all-too-obvious?
Judging from the cadre of camera people following the show members' every step through the soggy sod, you just know the footage will show up on Season 3 of the televised train wreck.

Art, Design and Business Success Stressed In 9-Day Series

Don't be surprised if a strange, "sinking" feeling overwhelms Atlanta April 26 through May 6. That's the period when heavyweights in the realms of fashion design, home decor, fine art and prestige marketing converge on the city for the Savannah College of Art and Design's "SCAD Style 2010" event series.
One of the series' many opportunities to rub elbows with industry all-stars occurs (Wednesday) April 28 at the Atlanta campus's Welcome Center (5:30-7 p.m.) when PR priestess Kelly Cutrone (above) appears. Cutrone, star of the Bravo! network's hit reality series "Kell on Earth" and author of the best-selling book "If You Have to Cry, Go Outside" will lecture on the "Real Deal" about fashion brand marketing and sign copies of her book.
The All-Star roster of "SCAD Style" guest lecturers is too lengthy to list here; and there is an equally impressive lineup scheduled to appear on the flagship Savannah campus during the same stretch of days. Other headliners during the Atlanta stint include: modeling icon Simone "Bettina" Bodin; photojournalist Jeanette Montgomery Barron; 7th Avenue marketing maven Jaqui Lividini; former Vogue editor Julia Reed; and the world's foremost authority on vintage fashion, Cameron Silver.
Residents of Atlanta's older "intown" enclaves should note that SCAD's President, Dr. Paula Wallace, will appear May 4 (8 p.m.) in the Gallery to sign copies of her latest book, "Perfect Porches: Designing Welcoming Spaces for Outdoor Living".
After a whirlwind stretch of events like this, people will need novel ideas on how to kick back and rest comfortably.

Anyone who thinks beauty and brains don't mix hasn't met Atlanta native Sonia Dara yet.
The six-foot-tall stunner who's pursuing an Economics degree at Harvard, specializes in setting precedents.
Dara is the first woman of South Asian descent ever to be featured in Sports Illustrated's best-selling Swimsuit Issue, and her captivating looks inspired SI to take the photographs in her exotic familial homeland: Rajasthan, India.
The Wall Street Journal recently described Dara, 20, as someone with a 'take charge' presence and 'global' appeal. Back home for a brief visit with Atlanta loved ones, however, the Fashion Week runway sensation couldn't be more demure or accommodating.

In Atlanta: Everything Old's New Again

Atlanta’s National Black Arts Festival is going back to the future.
The annual culture/concert series (July 14-18) is “compacting” in duration, according to the city’s Bureau of Cultural Affairs Director, Camille Russell Love, but “expanding in scope” to embrace groundbreaking achievements of the past.
To cap the festival off with a fashionable flourish, the NBAF will stage a Summer Festival Gala on July 17, when the grand atrium of the recently restored 200 Peachtree building will be transformed for a night into “Stormy’s Suppper Club”. Guests at the black tie ($300 per person) affair will be treated to jazz performed by a 16-piece band and lively dance performances.
To preview that event, a cadre of Atlanta’s best-dressed ladies and gents convened at the posh Jeffrey boutique at Phipps Plaza Tuesday night; sipping champagne and chardonnay and discussing their summer plans.
Brooke Edmond, daughter of Atlanta’s first African-American Mayor Maynard Jackson, and socialite Sonya Halpern hosted the party wearing outfits (Dries Van Noten and Barami, respectively) that evoked the Art Deco era. Embracing the “throwback” theme to the fullest, Edmond (above, left) accessorized her outfit with one of the acclaimed, eco-friendly designer Monique Pean’s necklaces made of wooly mammoth bones unearthed in Alaska.
“She’s the best new jeweler on the international scene,” Edmond said, “and yet she works with the most exquisite, ancient materials.”
Festival highlights in a historical vein will include: a screening of Oscar Micheaux’s 1925 silent film “Body and Soul” (starring Paul Robeson), with trombonist Wycliffe Gordon leading a live jazz band in accompaniment (July 14); a tenth-year commemoration of singer-songwriter Curtis Mayfield’s death called “To Curtis with Love”, where featured performers will recall his greatest hits (July 16); and a 40th Anniversary performance by the Philadanco dance company, set to the funkadelic music of George Clinton (July 15 & 17).

Fulton County’s Board of Commissioners Chairman, John Henry Eaves, got married to the former Ms. Cheryl Regina Upshaw Sunday afternoon in a tastefully understated ceremony in the ballroom of Midtown Atlanta’s Four Seasons Hotel.
The bride wore a stunning buttermilk gown with crystals edging the sweetheart bodice and bold ribbons lacing up the back. Finger-length diamond strands dangled from her ears and her look was topped off with a tiny tiara holding back her short, onyx ringlets of hair.
The couple stood alone at the altar, with the Reverend Gerald Durley officiating. The lithe and lovely long time co-chair Lila Hertz will be joined in the role by TBS International VP Louise Sams and the Vis-a-vis and Derma-Luxe salons owner, Jeffrey McQuithy. Those aren't the other alterations slated for the 18th annual soiree. We'll keep an Eye for developments...

GUEST OF HONOR: The Savannah College of Art and Design celebrates another coup Thursday (April 8, 6:30-9:30 p.m.) with a Scholarship Gala welcoming the arrival of one of the world's most worshipped wardrobes.
The globe-trotting philanthropist Cornelia Guest, daughter of the legendary fashion maven C.Z. Guest, will headline the gala highlighting the 400 pieces donated to SCAD Museum of Art. Among them: a pair of priceless "Delphos" period gowns designed by Mariano Fortuny and other outfits worn by the woman Truman Capote adored and Time magazine held in such esteem that she was featured on the cover of Time magazine as her day's premiere socialite.

PATENT PENDING: If the exotic shoe fits, chances are a former Georgia Tech engineering student had a hand in designing. Specialty shoe designer, Ron Donovan, makes a triumphant return to Atlanta this weekend to showcase the cobbler's craftsmanship he's spend a decade honing after abandoning the corporate climb and pursuing his true passion for fashion.
Donovan, who had a successful modeling stint here before going to Europe to learn shoe making at the literal heels of various masters, hosts a private Midtown launch party to benefit the Frank Ski Kids Foundation on Friday night for select guests grounded in the pursuit of custom stilettos. Then he'll stage a series of trunk shows by appointment at the posh Palomar hotel that runs through April 18. (To schedule an appointment, call 212-465-7402.)
After several years spent nurturing a private clientele that favors his "classic, but modernistic" approach to shoe designs in the $400-$2,750 price range, Donovan's looking to expand. His first major account is a good one: the luxe Church boutique in Los Angeles.
"Ultimately, I want to rank up their with the Guccis and Pradas and Louis Vuittons," he said by phone from his New York studio; in a rare moment of bravado. And he expounded on how a woman's feet would thank her for choosing him to accessorize her (if even her accountant might not) because his shoes are structurally engineered to wear comfortably for hours without sacrificing a shred of their sex appeal. as comfortably as they are sexy.
"The vamp is cut in a manner that's deceptive," he said. "It's on a high heel and it's got the toe cleavage, but it's built to hold the foot in place so it's more supportive."

IN YOUR DREAMS...: Sorry, Bubba, but you’re not going to witness a fantasy scene like this (left) Saturday during Atlanta’s planned observance of International Pillow Fight Day at Freedom Park.
You’re more likely to see a mash-up of somewhat sketchy characters who’ll celebrate the rites of spring by playing the human equivalent to Whack-a-Mole.
The weather forecast calls for showers during the event’s 3-5 p.m. time frame, so the melee could get especially messy on the green space at the corner of Moreland and North avenues.
Ironically, this viral, third annual event has a tacit set of rules to help quell the potential “violence” that might ensue. Once the starting air horn blasts, the all-ages crowd will be encouraged to wail away at each other for as long as possible. But they’re cautioned against bringing pillows so fragile that they’ll burst and unleash their foam/feather contents to the wind, or so sturdy that they could cause injury.
Small children are fragile,” the event’s Facebook page warns. “Please pummel the hobbits with care!”

In an exclusive interview and custom suit photo session with New York-based Complex magazine this week, the scoring machine there’s only one artist in America he trusts to ink up his skin. He referenced Atlanta, without naming names. According to the Oregonian, the Portland-based sporting goods behometh is asking Gwinnett County's Superior Court to find product developer Helen Woo in violation of her non-compete contract for jumping ship, after 13 years, and taking her knowledge south to Nfinity Products & Services instead. In a statement provided by its attorney, Nfinity countered that its staff and revenues are to puny to pose Nike any threats. Is this a local Cinderella story in the making? Retailer caters to the clueless with 'everyday' dressing guide.

The first rule of thumb for being a well-dressed man is that there are no rules for dressing well.
So says Tom Julian, author of the new “Nordstrom Guide to Men’s Every Day Dressing” (Chronicle, $17.95). Following up on brisk sales of his “Nordstrom Guide to Men’s Style”, Julian now urges this mindset: “Forget the rules. Think occasions.”
On Saturday (March 27, 6-8 p.m., free), Julian’s hosting a Hugo Boss-sponsored cocktail at the Phipps Plaza Nordstrom store to sign copies of the book and steer men toward the looks that can solve their wardrobe quandaries.
Julian, a tireless and world-renowned trend forecaster, said he’ll be there all day consulting men seeking advice on dressing for the four key occasions in life: work day, weekend, after hours and travel.
By phone from a book tour stop in Houston, Julian gave EyeSeeStyle an exclusive revelation of his book’s key principles…
ESS: This book treats “corporate casual” dressing as a given, but can you foresee a day coming where “traditional”, suit-and-tie dictates return to the workplace?
TJ: “Well, we already see how important the return of the blazer is to looking appropriate in the workplace. And, looking ahead, the ‘Wall Street II’ movie will certainly bring the tailored suit story to a whole new generation. But we can’t ignore that people are still driven by lifestyle.”

ESS: Out of the four “occasions” that your book guides men through, which do they find the hardest to come to grips with and gear up correctly for?
TJ: “I’d say it leans toward weekend-to-travel. On weekends, a man dives into his chores and activities. He still gravitates toward sweat pants and sweat shirts. There’s nothing wrong with that. But what he wants is to look good going from Starbucks to the soccer field to the mall. He just needs the perfect pieces that offer the versatility.”
ESS: Who really determines what’s in style in terms of menswear?: The magazines, the designers, the retailers or the customers?
TJ: “It’s a combination. The customer ultimately makes the buying decision. Retailers watch, participate in the discussion and make recommendations. It’s all more collaborative than ever. “

ESS: What does Nordstrom gain from publishing a succession of books about men’s style?
TJ: “The book becomes an authoritative piece, and an in-store tool. It’s working as a guide, and another mode of communication. And it’s selling, from a 12-year-old I met on the East coast to a four-decade premium card holder out here in the West. And I sold both of them clothes.”
ESS: You mention Atlanta’s most celebrated fashion retailer, Jeffrey Kalinsky, in the guide’s opening remarks; how did Kalinsky make an impact on the book?
TJ: “He gave very strong views about sportswear, and how the best modern pieces are actually classics worn in different ways. He helped conceptualize the dressy-to-casual concept, and made those photos in the book come to life. ”
ESS: While you’re traveling the world spotting trends, does any one city strike you as a place where men have a better grasp of how to dressing for the occasion?
TJ: “One city where men seem to get it right more often than most is London. But, then again, that’s a place known for great travel, great work environments, great evenings and weekend activities outdoors. And the retail scene supports it. Domestically, we have so many climate issues to deal with from L.A. to Chicago to New York that it’s hard to keep a balance as you move around.
ESS: Your book says to ‘forget the rules’, but aren’t there any that men should adhere to?
TJ: “I wouldn’t say these are rules, but I rely certain guidelines, like quality over quantity. Fit and proportion are key. And it’s probably best to shop for updated classics rather than trendy pieces.”

More Trouble For T.I.; Kudos To Kalinsky

Paroled rapper and prestigious retailer make headlines!

T.I.’s legal woes just won’t go away.
The Atlanta rapper who’s scheduled for release this week from house arrest after serving time for felony gun charges has just been slapped with a new lawsuit.
A suburban Chicago media firm is accusing T.I. of a violation that’s nothing to sneeze at: stealing the trademarked name Akoo for the clothing line the former drug dealer launched before he was caught in a sting operation involving high-powered automatic weapons.
T.I.’s Akoo brand is no stranger to controversy. Recently, New Jersey residents filed so many complaints about a risqué billboard ad campaign that the image of a woman on bended knees pulling man’s jeans down were scrapped within days.
In the current case, WWD.com reports, T.I. and his partners in the clothing venture are accused of defying a cease-and-desist order filed nearly two years ago. To clear up the confusion _ and what’s left of his reputation _ T.I. would be well-advised by attorneys to settle this one out of court.
NAVAL GAZING WITH JEFFREY: The other night's New York version of the annual Fashion Cares runway shows that Jeffrey Kalinsky stages to benefit breast cancer and AIDS charities sailed smoothly, according to reports.
The key difference between Fashion Cares events in Atlanta and Manhattan is that the former addresses women’s fall/winter wardrobe needs, while the latter caters to lads. The common thread: glitzy guests and millions raised for worthy causes.
Kalinsky _ owner of Phipps Plaza chicest boutique and a chief executive for Nordstrom _ has his heart in the right place. And he’s not afraid to rock the boat. In an extravagant gesture, Jeffrey staged his latest New York show aboard the historic U.S.S. Intrepid battle ship. Fittingly, he hosted the occasion wearing a militaristic outfit and a Navy cadet hairstyle.
Even though nautical looks are better suited for the warmer seasons, one wonder’s is Jeffrey will allow his oceanic view to carry over to his Atlanta show. Would Fashion Cares at the Georgia Aquarium float your boat?

Fonda plans a leg-warmer renaissance for May 1 at Atlanta’s Georgia Dome when she hosts the inaugural World Fitness Day demonstration. The first few thousand to register for the event will be treated to health and exercise tips from Fonda, Billy Blanks and the irrepressible Richard Simmons. In keeping with the at-home exercise craze Jane started decades ago, Ustream.tv will also broadcast the sweaty scene.

This “earth-shattering” exclusive that GQ magazine has with the woman who broke up John Edwards’ marriage is full of … clichés.
The worst of them is the unflattering choice of jewelry Rielle Hunter wears in photos for the April issue’s feature story.
A pearl necklace? Really? Hunter might as well have worn a replica of Monica Lewinsky’s “stained” blue dress!
Don’t believe the heifer’s professions of regret about the suggestive photos she willingly posed for. This self-proclaimed ‘free thinker’ – who admittedly slept with the former U.S. Presidential candidate just hours after they first met, and subsequently made a campaign trail sex tape with him - has no shame.
The article (written by Lisa DePaulo, with photos by Mark Seliger) is laboriously long, and raises more questions than it answers. For instance: what’s that animal print on the panties Hunter flashes not-so-demurely? Leopard? Cheetah? Skank?

Blue Wails on the Academy Awards Red Carpet?

Rate the gowns Mo'Nique, Mariah, and Gabby Sidibe wore!

How is it that all of the plus-sized women featured prominently at the 82nd Academy Awards all happened to wear Baltic blue gowns?
Did someone dictate to all the big girls (namely, the stars of "Precious") that the "slimming effect" of wearing black only goes so far?
This won't be a popular question among fans of Best Supporting Actress award-winner, Mo'Nique, but was a bunched-up satin dress really the best choice she had?
Flap your flabby arms if you thought her frock was a winner!

And, speaking of the right to bare arms, how did you like the crystal-studded Sea World tarp that "Precious" star Gabby Sidibe wore to the Academy Awards? That gathered, off-the-shoulder effect really accentuated her best features, didn't it?
And - as kept man, Nick Cannon, surely mutters from time to time - let's not even get into Mariah!
With all that (faux or real?) padding going on with her, you'd almost expect Martin Lawrence to come popping out as an uninvited guest shooting guerilla footage for Big Momma 3.
But that's not the point.
The point is, their stylists let them down.
It's their astoundingly expressive faces that have been emphasized; not their cleavage or thighs or (ahem) forcepts.
Whether they wore matching colors or not, all three would have ranked higher on best-dressed lists if they'd chosen A-line gowns with high necklines and longer sleeves. Something like the stunningly sophisticated garb Oprah wore, in a duskier blue hue, to the Oscars.
Too bad the onscreen women of "Precious" got beached in the low tide of high styles strutted on Oscars red carpet. This talented trio deserves better in the awards night wardrobe department.

Is "Freaknik: The Musical" Atlanta's Finest Hour?

Wasn't it Don Quixote who said, "Comedy is tragedy, plus time"?
If so, "Man of La Mancha" meet T-Pain.
Some years back, according to lore, some Cartoon Network producers decided to make an animated ode to Freaknik; the loud, lewd and congestive street parties that hordes of (predominantly) black youth engaged in annually under the guise of a "Black Spring Break".
A decade after city officials sagely shut such gatherings down for good, some idiots still lament Freaknik's demise.
For them, the impossible dream's resurrected in the form of a 60-minute, animated re-enactment of the objectifying spectacle. It's "Freaknik: The Musical", airing late Sunday night.
T-Pain, the Grammy-winning Atlanta hip-hop producer takes a leading role.
Reportedly, he Auto-Tunes the character of the 'spook' of Freakniks past.
How's this for an image to savor? He looks like a blinged-out, gold-toothed Magnum condo with a pimp cup in his hand.
But it's all in good taste, of course. Otherwise, the locally-based cable network and a slew of Dirty South rappers and R&b dinosaurs wouldn't have shackled their names to this most tragic reflection of when "keepin' it real" goes wrong.

Don’t look now, folks… okay, just take a peek … but “Real Housewives of Atlanta” phenom Kim Zolciak (left) is pulling an Emeril. The roadside blonde has taken it up a notch by launching a new web site where you can follow her faux lesbian antics for the sake of the cameras and bay watch as she frollics in the surf for sycophant camera people…
PANTHER PARTY: Apparently, the PR bruising NFL quarterback Michael Vick sustained after being incarcerated for Federal dog fighting offenses has him feeling “black and blue”. The fleet-footed QB may have put his cleats in his mouth recently by confiding to a hip-hop radio show that he’s most interested in playing for the Carolina Panthers if the Philadelphia Eagles don’t re-sign him after his current, rehabilitative contract expires in a few months.
CABIN PRESSURE: If you’re on an AirTran flight to or from Atlanta, and the flight attendants seem a tad grumpy, they may be justified. It seems that the gals and guys in polyester flight suits are fuming over the airline’s decision to plaster the impossibly foxy image of a Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue model on at least one its Boeing 737s. Heaven help any male passengers who make untoward references about “nuts”.
OWEN AN APOLOGY: Traffic backed up around your favorite Atlanta haunts? Having trouble with all the single ladies fainting in the streets? Blame it on Hollywood heartthrob Owen Wilson, who’s currently filming a romantic comedy with an improbable premise in and around town. Reportedly, it’s a film called “Hall Pass”, where the male lead gets permission from his wife to “see” other women. Yeah, right!
LaRosa Envy: Throngs of women (and men, for that matter) would willingly undergo root canals for the chance to channel their weather-casting expertise on a platform as popular as Atlanta-based Weather Channel. Those many dreams will be deferred for a while because the storm network’s just hired someone new to ‘splain why Al Gore’s climate predictions defy explanation. Maria LaRosa is reportedly pulling up her Philly roots to spice up the channel as a new anchor. Watch your back, Dagmar!

Kobe Bryant Gives GQ Mag 'The Finger'

What’s the point of doing a nine-page cover story on a mega-celebrity who’s not willing or able to provide three Tweets worth of words worth printing?
That's the question you'll likely ask after reading the awe-inspired feature on L.A. Lakers guard Kobe Bryant in the March '10 issue of GQ.
Penned by the superb, formerly Atlanta-based scribe J.R. Moehringer, the article sheds as little light on the first ballot Hall of Famer's sense of style as it does on his sense of purpose.
Aside from the cover shot of Kobe outfitted (sharply) in a peak-lapeled Dolce & Gabbana suit, the only other clothes shown in the spread are a Jockey tank top and a pair of J. Crew jeans.
And rather than give any clues about the genesis of his win-at-all-costs mindframe on the court, Bryant merely smirks that he and his wife Vanessa typically engage in war-like games of Cranium.
The article pays scant reference to Bryant's lasting animosity toward former teammate Shaquille O'Neal, and wastes too many words explaining why Kobe can't discuss that incident with a hotel clerk seven years ago in Colorado.
Instead, it fixates _ at the beginning and end _ on a nagging injury to Kobe's "shooting" finger. And it diverts our focus to Kobe's penchant for shuttling from his mansion to "work" on a private helicopter.
Did GQ get taken for a ride on this high-budget cover project? Or, as the most poignant and monosyllabic quote that Kobe offered up about that precious finger the sum of the man?
Maybe he's "sore", and nothing else.

And if anyone in what’s left of the resurrected NFL star’s entourage has Vick’s best interests in mind, they’ll shield him from the reported $1 million offer to pose nude in PLAYGIRL with the swift, unyielding effort of an All-Pro right tackle.
Vick’s an unconventional player whose “unconventional” lifestyle off the field earned him a long stretch in federal confinement and cost him a fortune in salary and endorsements.

"This way he could donate a large sum to PETA and all he'd have to do is pose for the magazine! It's kind of a win-win situation!"
That’s more trash than OchoCinco and T.O. together could spew on Twitter on their worst days!
In truth, it’s a lose-lose proposition if Team Vick even dignifies PLAYGIRL’s ploy with a response at all.
This is a man who spent many months subject to naked scrutiny (to say the least) by scores of strangers in the penal system as punishment for funding a dogfight operation.
Allowing PLAYGIRL any piece of his ass would sabotage an attempted comeback that has precious little time left on the clock.

Eureka! Finally there's scientific proof that there's a tremendous (read: healthy) upside to having a bodacious backside!
According to a report issued by BlackDoctor.org, British researchers at the University of Oxford recently reached the conclusion that "fat in the butt and thighs of women may help them live longer".
In layman's terms: junk in the trunk stores the healthy sort of fatty acids women need to help avoid diseases of the heart and other organs. As Sir Mix-A-Lot put it so sagely: "You can do side bends or sit-ups, but please don't lose that butt"
Scientists now believe that it's belly fat that can cause women the most long-term harm.
As a cautionary note, the study's lead researcher Konstantinos Manolopoulos echoed a caution most often attributed to America's First Lady Michelle Obama lately: Everything's best enjoyed in moderation.
Said Manolopoulos: ‘Control of body weight is still the best way to stay healthy, and the advice remains the same: it is important to eat less and exercise more.’
In an odd way, the Oxford study validates the ploy for attention that V magazine waged with its February issue devoted to "Size" (left) and the undeniable beauty of bigger women.
The question remains: Will the fashion world sit up (to the dining table) and take notice?

Aurum Lounge: Atlanta's New Gold Standard?

How many A- and B-List Atlanta personalities can be crammed between more gold leather sofas, amber lamps and glass fixtures than Liberace could horde?
That question came to mind during a recent preview party prior to the official grand opening of the Aurum (Au) Lounge at the corner of Peachtree and Eighth in Midtown. Most remarkable was how "at home" everyone seemed to feel as they meandered around the gilded room. It probably helped that virtually everyone there could have looked up at the massive projector screen hanging over the main bar and eventually caught a flattering glimpse of themselves courtesy of Ben Rose Photography.
Aurum has an undeniable glow about it. That's what prompted EyeSeeStyle's follow-up visit to the space for a brief dialogue with the visionaries (managing partner Mike Hsu and interior designer Michael Habachy) behind the prodigious project.

With friends like Kanye West, who needs a runway show?
To me, it says a lot about what a sad state the fashion business must be in if the boldest headlines you can find these days concern which European designer shows West and his crutch, Amber Rose, attended.
Scratch real hard _or pay a subscription to a trade journal, if necessary _ and you’ll find true glimpses of brilliance emerging from the Spring 2010 and Pre-Fall collections of Chanel, Armani and Lanvin and Louis Vuitton, among others.
Business must be really bad if prestige labels are so starved for recognition that they’re letting attention-seekers like West & Co. distract critical eyes away from the runway. What are they doing, filming a reality show or something over there in Paris and Milan?
The notion that a show’s not “important” if recognized faces aren’t seated (an hour late) in the front row is tired. Wake me up when the nightmare known as “Kanye Goes to Fashion Week” is over.
While we're at it...let's call this a "That's Just Wrong Wednesday". This first time, we'll feature your girl Venus Williams. In a preliminary match this week at the Australian Open, Serena's big sister sent shockwaves Down Under with her choice of flesh-colored under shorts to complement her acid green tennis outfit. There's a bunch of shots of the ensemble out there on the web, and not a flattering one among them.
So, that's just wrong. Right?

GQ Gets Andre 3000 and Lady GaGa Confused

Is it just me? Or is there something off base about the way GQ Magazine describes designer(?)-actor-Outkast artist Andre Benjamin in its latest issue dedicated to "The 25 Most Stylish Men in the World"?
Accompany a photo of Benjamin, a.k.a. Andre 3000, perched on a rooftop ledge, GQ brands him as the, "Master of Constant Reinvention".
Isn't that the kind of thing you say about Madonna, or Miley Cyrus?
Couldn't they have just portrayed him simply as a man of "Exquisite Taste"?
(I know one of Dre's tailors. The suits he has 'in production' are ill!)
To the February GQ's credit: it does give Benjamin the room to explain, in his own words, a recent penchant for wearing knee-high boots with tweedy jackets and Dick Tracy hats.
Other notables on GQ's list include: LaFace Records founder and on-and-off Atlantan, L.A. Reid; NBA star LeBron James; rap's answer to Mick Jagger, Jay-Z; and CNN's unflappable Anderson Cooper.
The magazine invites readers to engage in an online poll to pick THE MOST stylish man of all; and from the options offered, my vote's split between former Clash bassist Paul Simonon and "Italian automotive scion" Lapo Elkann.

Chris Brown Involved In Another 'Bloodbath'

You'd think disgraced pop music star Chris Brown would still be haunted by images of the scars and bruises he plead guilty to inflicting on his former girlfriend Rihanna last year.
You'd think Brown _ or at least his handlers _ would have better judgement than to make him this week's poster boy for assault and battery.
But no: this week at the fall/winter 2010 preview of Jean-Paul Gaultier's menswear line in Paris, Brown willfully and shamelessly took part in a display that evokes his history of violence.
Brown smudged his sullied reputation even further Thursday by mugging for photographers with Gaultier, who'd had his face made up to look as if he'd been pistol-whipped.
The designer's publicity ploy was in keeping with the pugilistic theme of his preview. Models _ sporting bloody lips, black eyes and gashed cheeks _ wore boxing gloves along with their tuxedos, cardigans and crisply tailored suits.
Photos distributed after the show proved how much Gaultier's matured as a fashion merchant. But the spectacle of Brown embracing "Fight Club" couture strikes us as a low blow.

Halle Berry's New Fragrance 'Pure Orchid' Blooms

With the breaking beauty news on WWD.com that Oscar-winning actress Halle Berry is launching a limited-edition of her first signature fragrance next month, add one more item to EyeSeeStyle's growing list of "no-brainers" for the Valentine's shopping list.
We haven't had a true whiff of Pure Orchid by Halle Berry, yet. But just like the forthcoming new album by Sade, "Soldier of Love", our instincts tell us the "Monster's Ball" star has another best-seller on her hands.
For one thing: the bottle is gorgeous, and begging like a melting block of ice to be clutched. For another, the marketing honchos say the scent's meant to evoke Halle's esssentially "voluptuous" appeal.
Halle chimed in to call Pure Orchid, "reflective of who I am".
The guess here is that whatever Halle wears during her stint as a presenter at the 2010 Golden Globe Awards will go a long way toward pushing the fragrance's first-month sales.

R.I.P., Teddy Pendergrass Dies At Age 59

The music world today mourns the passing of Teddy Pendergrass, who has reportedly succumbed to a lengthy bout with cancer.
As far as we're concerned, Pendergrass was unmatched in terms of stage presence and his soaring vocals. During the late 1970s especially, his public personna defined "swagger" before it was misguidedly co-opted as the current catch phrase for masculinity.
He'll be sorely missed, but we'll always have his music to relish and reflect on...

Apparently, PETA has no shame when it comes to self-promotion at the expense of others.
The self-righteous animal protection group pulls no punches when it comes to co-opting private citizens for its aims.
Without permission, PETA is using a photo-shopped image of First Lady Michelle Obama in one of its latest anti-fur campaigns.
Now that NFL QB Michael Vick has managed to begin resurrecting his football career after a conviction for dog-fighting, PETA is indignantly expressing its right to trick people into thinking that Mrs. Obama supports its mission by placing a photo of her alongside Carrie Underwood, Oprah Winfrey and Tyra Banks. The fervent protest group claims it's all okay because the Washington Times printed a quote by the First Lady in 2009 stating that she does not wear fur.
From the perspective of this keeper of two rescue mutts, PETA's grasps for attention grow continually laughable and off-putting.

GQ Validate's EyeSeeStyle's View of Atlanta

We don't relish saying we told you so, but WE TOLD YOU SO!
Hard as is to believe, it's been nearly a year since the first declarative statement we ever gave you. And now, in its January 2010 issue, GQ magazine backs us up.
It was Feb. 11, '09 when we posted what a "superb new restaurant" Serpas in the Old Fourth Ward was. Ranking in at No. 10 of GQ's "10 Best New Restaurants in America" this year is...guess who.
GQ dining critic Alan Richman writes that chef Scott Serpas' cooking is, "raucous _ a little messy and a touch out of control, but I love his passion and sense of place."
What we said about Serpas, way back when, was that it was "love-at-first-sight".
Anyway, kudos to GQ for paying Atlanta some attention, and to the great Mr. Richman for uncovering a hidden gem.

Lo and behold, though: the fair, mistreated Elin has a blinging ring on her wedding finger in that shot of her in chic Chamonix, France!
A few week’s back, the media gaped at photos of her pumping gas into her luxury SUV without one on. This shot just fuel’s the flames.
Wouldn’t one run a much greater risk of losing an heirloom like that FOREVER on a ski slope than at the local GasUpNGo?

Is Beyonce's New Fragrance 'Heat' A Hot Mess?

Faithful EyeSeeStyle readers may recall that, three months ago, this spot cast a sideways glance at Beyonce's legal struggles over the rights to her Sasha Fierce stage personna. It threatened the payout she stood to reach from Coty, which planned a planetary perfume launch with her name affixed to it.
Apparently, Abercrombie & Fitch (the chain that's sold its own scent, called "Fierce", for years) had a stronger hand in the court battle. Coty and Beyonce have skirted the issue entirely, WWD.com reports, and plan an early 2010 campaign for "Heat" by Beyonce, instead.
WWD's report says as much as $300 million is at stake on this venture, and quotes Beyonce gushing: "I always asked myself, ‘If I could have my own scent, what would it be?’ ... I wanted to make sure that it was something I would love forever.”
To boost sales, Beyonce's butchered/recorded a remake of the Peggy Lee classic serenade, "Fever".
Smells like desperation to me.

Chef Luna's Back in Atlanta with 'Uninspired' food

You can only keep a secret for so long.
Chef Paul Luna called me some time around Halloween to alert me that he had something up his monogrammed smock sleeve. Finally, EyeSeeStyle feels free to spread the news that he's back after a multi-year hiatus from the Atlanta dining scene with a new downtown restaurant that revels in a "hush-hush" personna.
Luna, who rose to fame, acclaim and (ahem) notoriety with his original Loca Luna tapas emporium in Midtown is back in town with an equally provocative concept: small plates, made to order if necessary, made from the daily ingredients he discerns as freshest and worth the reasonable price.
I'll leave it to the dining critics who follow up on this dispatch and evaluate the food.
Here's what struck me most about the menu I swiped off the vintage writing desk in the entryway: you can order the ENTIRE lunch (11 a.m. - 5 p.m.) menu for $20!
Since this is an insider dispatch, I won't bog you down with the savory details now.

New Gold club flavor re-heats Atlanta nights

Yes, if you must know: there is still a "pole" placed smack dab in the middle of the Buckhead party space once known as The Gold Club.
But it's strictly there out of structural necessity, a co-owner of the new Gold Room stressed during an exclusive walk-through with EyeSeeStyle.

"We wanted to take it out, but the architect said, 'No', because it holds the roof up," Jonathan Clay said just prior to his first nightclub venture's public opening.
"But you can tell it's not the same place. The stage is gone."
The pole in question is covered in postage stamp-sized bits of gold tile; and it's surrounded by a quartet of plush sofa sets with built-in drawers for women to stow their purses and tables with sunken inserts where tequila bottles custom designed by Corzo for the Gold Room sit and chill.
After a string of "friends and family" events to test out the staff (Halloween night, the Kravitz concert's after-party) the Gold Room opens to the public on December 3.

EyeSeeStyle Gets Beneath Gold Room's Surface

At the new Gold Room there are no specific "dance floor" boundaries, but from the towering LCD displays to the shock wave sound system to the strategically placed "power" booths, this place glitters with "get up and boogie" potential. Among the many distinctive details: fat (not "phat") gold chains dripping down a wall in The Lounge upstairs; and a VIP voyeur's delight of glassed-in corner chamber that's visible from every point in the 7,000-square-foot space and surveys the entire scene unfolding below as well.
Rather than starting off with a price structures for prime seating and easy entry that, "turns 'em upside down and shakes the money ou", Clay said door and booth fees will be dictated by demand.
Some things never change.

Hope really does spring eternal.
The Atlanta shopping mecca Phipps Plaza and the L.A.-based luxury sportswear label, Vince, show no doubt that the stagnant U.S. economy will recover and that the mall will eventually be mobbed again with shoppers seeking signs of renewal to show off.
They’ve sealed a deal to open a signature boutique in April 2010 for the brand that started small eight years ago and is quickly expanding into fashion capitols nationwide. Vince caters to the crowd willing to pay premium prices ($125 - $295) for logo-free staples like hoodies, cardigans, jeans and sweatpants.

Cavalia in Atlanta: Do Horses Wear Hair Weaves?

Someone had to ask the delicate question...
After all, gazing at the long and lustrous manes of the 60 exotic horses who star in the
Cavalia extravaganza incites the same skepticism as focusing on that hairline of Tyra Banks' flat screen-sized forehead does.
It can't look that haute and healthy and be real. Can it.? Publicity photos for the show running at Atlanta's Atlantic Station through November 15, in particular, make the manes look too good to be true.
But the only (human) performer in the show with true ties to Atlanta insists that those flowing locks the horses flaunt onstage are "all natural".
"Do (the horses) wear extensions? No," Dacula native, Jesse Lee Cooper, said while stroking the nose of grey-maned stallion, Hades, after an abbreviated (45-minute) preview staged for the local media Monday.
"Do we (performers) wear them? Oh, yes.)
The show's trick riders, trainers and a crew of 20 handlers wash and style and crimp, cut and blow dry the horses' hair themselves. And human performers adapt hairstyles that relate to the beauty of the 12 breeds showcased.
Cooper, 31, joined the six-year-old, globe-trotting production in 2007; after years training in the art of "natural horsemanship".
He knows which horses are more vain than others, and which are prone to pull a Kanye West (bucking all boundaries of excess) onstage.
(Nothing like being thrown from the saddle to get the message: "I'm not doing that tonight", he said. "They're 500-pound animals. You can't make them do what they don't want to.")
And, you can't make this stuff up...
While giving his "wonder" horse, Hades, a prideful pat, Cooper off-handedly divulged a possible reason why the herd's had no "bad hair" days.
"I don't know if I should say, but do you wanna what we're using in the stables right now?". Cooper coughed: "It's Tresame!"

More Frightening Atlanta 'Housewives' News!

They're creepy and they're kooky. Mysterious and spooky. They're altogether ... oops! Got ahead of ourselves there.
First we need to get to the scary prospect of "The Real Housewives of Atlanta" staging a Halloween costume party together next Friday night.
Then we'll pay brief homage to Vic Mizzy, composer of theme song to "The Addams Family" who passed away in New York just days away from his 93rd Night of Fright.
Here's the low-down on what we highly suspect to be a made-for-TV event...
ALL of the cast members are expected to be there. This, presumably, includes the stylist-interloper Dwight Eubanks, who could pull off a fairly convincing Dracula just rolling out of bed. There's a $500 prize promised to go to the guest in the best costume. The Gateway center in suburban McDonough, where the event's taking place, can accomodate a crowd of 3,000. A "tag team" of Audio Junkeez DJs will perform. Tickets are $30-$75, with a $10 discount if you buy in advance.

Good, now smile in memory of Mr. Mizzy, who created many of TV's "Golden Era" theme songs including "Green Acres".
This Halloween, we'd planned to have "Thriller" piping constantly on the porch as trick-or-treaters dropped by. But now we're having second thoughts about that, as well as what costumes to wear to the after parties.

Adidas Smells More of Rose's Marketing Potential

Pardon the South African golfer, Justin Rose, if he’s not updating his personal blog as often as usual.
His latest dispatch reads: “I’m currently in the Algarve playing the Portugal Masters”.
After rising from 114th place in the 2008 FedEx points standings to 85 in ’09, Rose is still criss-crossing the globe in hopes of surpassing the $1,047,854 in prize money he earned last year. At press time, PGAtour.com listed Rose’s ’09 earnings as $918,718. By the time he turns 30 next July, the fifth-year pro’s play will have carried him over the $10 million mark.
And that’s not including endorsements.
Apparently, Adidas thinks Rose’s future is so bright that he’s gotta wear shades. They’re shades.
This week the brand announced that it’s releasing its first collection of golf-specific sunglasses _ called “retego” _ which Rose helped design.
The eyewear can be customized to suit special vision needs, and comes standard with a lens tint intended to enhance the contrast between the ball, the turf and the target.
They weigh a feathery one-ounce, and carry a hefty ($140-&190) price tag.
We presume Rose get around, eventually, to mentioning them on his blog.

'Chittlin' Circuit' Makes A Big Atlanta Comeback

They say the third time's the charm.
If that's the case, then installment three of chef Todd Mussman's glorified "cooking with swine" series should truly be one to savor. When a guy runs an intown butcher shop called "Muss & Turners", what he carves up better be good.
"Guests will witness a whole pig being broken down into tasty, identifiable parts followed by some wood-fired samples," according to the invite.
In addition, at "Primal 3": "There will copious amounts of food (sliders & snacks from Grindhouse Killer Burgers on Sweet Auburn), wine (and cheeses selected by the Taste Network) and (Sweetwater) brew."
For three straight Wednesdays (6-9 p.m.) at the Grindhouse (209 Edgewood Ave.) , Mussman will turn locally grown succulents on the spit while spitting how and why roast flesh tastes best. Paying guests for the limited-seating affairs are welcome to "brown bag" their own wine as long as they call ahead (404-522-344).

If the rough-and-tumble stars of the NFL can rock pink accessories on game day without anyone questioning their manliness, what's to stop Monday Morning Quarterbacks like you from following suit?
This fall,the National Football League is doing its part to raise breast cancer awareness and charitable donations by encouraging players to wear apparel in the symbolic shade of the fight. That explains all those gregarious pink shoes, gloves, towels, belts and even penalty flags appearing on the gridiron lately.
The upcoming Real Men Wear Pink party Wednesday night (7-10 p.m) at the W Hotel-Perimeter offers one of many opportunities for regular guys to follow suit.
Besides swilling Hennessy and Belvedere cocktails, can soak in the artwork of Monica Tookes as well as the sound stylings of DJ Salah.
For guys who find their wardrobes sorely lacking in pink accessories, signature bow ties will be available for purchase on the spot ($20 each), with all proceeds going to the American Cancer Society.

Menswear Titans Barnstorm Atlanta

There's something about Marty.
The CEO of Joseph Abboud menswear, Marty Staff, couldn't try harder to put a new acquaintance at ease. Oddly, though, his propensity to lumber in and out of "the moment" can put you on edge.
He barged, unwittingly, into the recent EyeSeeStyle taping of an interview with menswear expert Tom Julian, who recently penned the "Nordstrom Guide to Men's Style" (Chronicle Books). Marty must have assumed we were just chatting there in the Phipps Plaza foyer. Julian and I just laughed about the ruined footage.

But minutes later he invited me to a party he was staging Wednesday night _ at the most exclusive restaurant in town _ in appreciation for his labels' most faithful local clients and salesmen. The food, drinks and service at Bacchanalia was superb. And the 100 or so guests dove into the limited quantity bolts of fabric offered "for suggestion" as enthusiastically as they did the platters of citrus foie gras, quail fritters, oysters and caviar crisps.
(EyeSeeStyle taped Julian's entire trend tutorial on behalf of the Abboud label after the first round of cocktails in an oakey private room. But since Marty kept drifting in and out of the demonstration _ interjecting some levity, invoking his dominance _ the clip ran eight minutes too long to upload on YouTube.)

But his thumbprint's everywhere: from a juggernaut of new "JOE" styles now on JCPenney racks, to his licensing agreement with the NFL to outfit the coaches for their off-field appearances, to his new deal with the NBA to clothe the league's rising stars.

Beyonce in a Legal Battle for Her Own Name

I’d truly meant to spare you all the news that broke Monday about Beyonce finally inking her first signature fragrance deal. My reasoning: it’s gonna be made by Coty, no one above voting age would dare wear it; and it’ll probably stank like Lady GaGa after a spinning class.
But the news just got juicier, so it merits sharing.
According to a breaking WWD.com report, a lawsuit’s just been filed against Beyonce that seeks to restrict her from following through with the perfume license that was expected to add another $3 to $10 million to her bank account over the next three years.
Abercrombie & Fitch, of all people, marched into U.S. District Court Tuesday seeking to force Beyonce from capitalizing on her “Sasha Fierce” alter ego. This sets up as an intriguing court battle.
Reportedly, A&F trademarked the “Fierce” fragrance name back in 2003, but Beyonce started trying to trademark a “Sasha Fierce” as a fragrance (without a manufacturer or retail deal in place) just last year. In spite of “cease and desist”. warnings from A&F’s lawyers to back off, Beyonce went on with the process
The announcement of Bey’s new perfume deal just threw gas on the fire, apparently.
Take-away Lesson: Trademark your contrived, new, concert-ticket-selling stage name before you foist it on the numb-skull masses.

'Real Housewives' star selling underwear

Go ahead, call me Ishmael.
I just couldn’t resist taking a hasty ‘fishing’ expedition once word reached me about the pending Fashion Week debut of Dwight Eubanks’ new underwear line.
Eubanks owns the venerable Purple Door Salons in Atlanta and deserves to have his mugshot placed next to the definition of “lavish” in any dictionary. The TV-viewing public knows him best as the chap who virtually hijacked Season 1 of Bravo’s “Real Housewives of Atlanta” franchise.
“Who is this girl (Sheree) who had a fashion show with no fashions?”
If that’s not Bartlett’s material, what is?
Anyway, Eubanks (left, with Atlanta socialite Tracie Howard) has an ax to grind with the sorry state of men’s underwear. And he reckons he’ll start correcting it with the launch of his new “Tool Box” label on September 14 at the M2 Ultra Lounge in lower Manhattan.
Partial proceeds from the $40-$100 collection, which will include pajamas and smoking jackets at retail outlets to be determined, will benefit AIDS charities.
“I’m going for the kill,” Eubanks said, after being asked how far he’s willing to reach for more than the fame “Real Housewives…” has already afforded him..
He calls “Tool Box” one man’s humble answer to the saggy, baggy jeans trend popularized by urban youth.
“They’re not going to stop wearing their pants that way. So they might as well show (underwear) that looks good.”
And he demurely coughed _ three times, at suggestive two second intervals _ when asked if the underwear brand launch was part of a master plan to land a reality series of his own.
“If that was what this is all about, then it would have to include everything about me: the parties I throw, the circles I travel in, the hair, the makeup, all that. But I wouldn’t rule it out.”

Top 10 Fashion Colors for 2010 Announced

Think twice, ladies, before you start weeding out items in your current spring/summer wardrobes. According to the leading indicator of color trends for 2010, some things you already have may get a second life.
Just as New York Fashion Week is getting underway, the Pantone Color Institute has revealed the Top 10 shades chosen by designers in Manhattan for their ready-to-wear collections.
According to a WWD.com report, roughly 13 percent of all designers staging previews showed a preference for the same three pastel shades registered by Pantone: turquoise, aurora (yellow) and violet.

On the lower edge of unanimity, about 7 percent of designers preferred: dried herb (olive), pink and (bright) blue.
Pantone’s executive director, Leatrice Eiseman, told WWD the color choices were a sign of “cautious optimism”.
They lead this Eye to expect that white and brown will be the key accessory colors.

Ebony Fashion Fair Fizzles Out

Say farewell to those outdated runway productions known as the Ebony Fashion Fair. After 50 years of striving to rise above the “chittlin’ circuit” of traveling trend previews, Ebony has admitted defeat against the rising tide of dire economics.
United Press International reports that the show won’t go on. According to UPI, Johnson Publishing CEO Linda Johnson Rice released a Labor Day weekend statement, saying: “In the coming months, we will develop a new business model to ensure that the show is a mutually beneficial endeavor.”
She also alluded to “challenges” in enticing corporate sponsors.
Man, oh man: can this mean that the demise of Jet and Ebony magazines can’t be far behind?
For decades, the Ebony Fashion Fair has served as a major fund-raising vehicle, and the Miami Herald has already quoted an area philanthropist who calls the news “devastating”.
But is it really?

Did the “stomp-pop-and-twirl” cavalcade stand any chance of survival in this “Real Housewives…” world we’ve adopted?
Does anyone out there think the Ebony Fashion Fair will be missed?

New Couple Alert!: Ne-Yo and Lil Kim?

Oops! My bad.
When this photo of the grinning R&B singer/songwriter Ne-Yo first hit my desktop, I mistook his “date” at the Glamorama event in Chicago for the felonious female rapper who’s had as much cosmetic work as Joan Rivers.
Or, so it seems.
After closer inspection, that was the iconic muppet Miss Piggy posing on the red carpet with the Atlanta-based hitmaker; throwing more gas on the fire of speculation about his tastes in women.
According to a breaking WWD.com report Tuesday night, Ne-Yo and P-Wiggy were VIP guests at an “anything goes” fashion event that featured a “men’s version of a wet underwear contest”.
Ne-Yo reportedly declare while onstat that he might have stripped down to his skivvies too, but: “They didn’t want me to make the other models look bad.”

GQ Mocks the 'Morehouse Mystique'

If you take offense at the way Gentlemen’s Quarterly depicts Morehouse in its September issue, blame it on what GQ calls the “Fonzworth Bentley” effect.
The magazine skewers some of the nation’s most revered institutions, with Morehouse appearing prominently on the list of schools GQ admits to holding some prejudice against.
In its note to readers regarding the list’s “methodology”, GQ writes: “First we think about people who annoy us…Then we write down what colleges they went to…”.
GQ’s inflammatory remarks about what it takes to be a Morehouse Man these days includes such lifestyle essentials as: “Yellow V-neck sweater with orange-and-blue bow tie”, and “box-seat double date to Coldplay”.
Out of 25 schools ranked as ‘least manly’(in polite terms*), GQ ranked Morehouse 20th. And it was the sole HBCU listed.
